Remember the two-volume book ‘Concept of Physics’ considered the bible for science students in 11th and 12th grade? Well its author, HC Verma was recently awarded the prestigious Padma Shri award by President Kovind. Let us know about him.
Crux of the Matter
Dr Harish Chandra Verma or HC Verma as he is known lovingly by all physics lovers in India, is an experimental physicist and emeritus professor of IIT Kanpur.
Life As A Brilliant Professor
In early 1980, Harish joined Patna Science College as a lecturer. After teaching for 15 years there, he joined IIT Kanpur as an assistant professor. Here he pursued research in experimental nuclear physics and published 139 research papers, before retiring in 2017.
Why do we study? What for teachers teach? If the vision is not clear, we should not expect positive results. Marks cannot be the target, capabilities and empowerment certainly is. The central theme is that child is an empty bowl. Students must be given situations where they think. We need to catch them young.
H C Verma
Passionate For Training Young Minds
He has developed 600+ ‘low cost’ physics experiments, which many teachers use in their classrooms for making lessons more understandable and interesting for students.
In 2011, Harish setup NANI or the National Anveshika Network of India, a flagship programme of the Indian Association of Physics Teachers. There are currently 22 Anveshikas in the country.
He has also co-founded Shiksha Sopan, a social upliftment organization for economically weaker children living near the campus of IIT Kanpur.
